Description

Defeated in his presidential bid, Senator Raymond Neilson is content to fade into political obscurity, but his campaign manager is not. Adam Corbett is obsessed with winning. After WWII, when they flew B-26 missions together, Corbett joins Neilson's Wall Street law firm while Neilson is elected to the U.S. Senate. His family's wealth and his exemplary war record eventually make him the Republican's presidential nominee. He chooses Corbett as his campaign manager despite Corbett's naivete regarding national politics. Unaware that the Party used Neilson as its sacrificial lamb in an unwinnable election, Corbett blames himself for the defeat. He convinces Neilson to stay politically visible, but noncommittal, while he plans retribution. Corbett breaks every rule of diplomatic conduct in his quest to unseat the incumbent president — even organizing an armed invasion by Cuban expatriates with CIA support and Mafia money in a desperate attempt to win the last campaign.
